Heart Men stopped in Cats claw

Scratched by a cat scratch may be a matter of course for animal lovers. But a man experiencing an emergency condition a week after scratched by a cat. Why is that?

A week after the cat scratched-in-law, Jon Taylor (44 years) had to undergo emergency surgery because of the bacteria in a cat claw into the blood stream, leading to septicemia (blood poisoning). His heart had stopped beating a few seconds. Luckily, the operation can save her life.

"I'm in the kitchen when the cat jumped to my feet from the oven and leave two claws scratching along the 6 cm. After giving medication and bandage wounds, I do not think about it anymore," said Jon Taylor, as quoted Dailymail, Tuesday (12/13/2011 ).

Wound in the skin has allowed strains of streptococcal bacteria get into the cat's claws bloodstream Jon. Bacteria that enter and proliferate ultimately affects the aortic valve in his heart, which serves to control the flow of blood throughout the body.

Two days after Jon bruised body condition began to decline, but he just thought it was because of the flu. The day after that, he felt very sick to just be lying in bed.

"I usually tough, but I was surprised at how the flu has made me weak for 6 days," said Jon, who lives with his wife Stephanie and their three children near Okehampton, Devon.

The next night, Jon was awakened by a throbbing pain in his left ring finger, which causes swelling the next day and turned purple. But he had not thought about it and thought the finger was swollen and purple just because of falling objects at work. He did not know that the finger was swollen and purple are the typical symptoms of septicemia.

Septicemia occurs when bacteria multiply in the blood, causing widespread inflammation that damages vital organs. If not treated promptly, septic shock can develop, in which bacterial toxins cause decreased blood pressure.

Finally, the organ began to fail and cause of death in more than half of patients. Bacteria can enter the bloodstream through open surgery and dental abscesses, as well as burns and scratches.

"I still do not think that the symptoms had something to do with cuts scratches, because it seemed to have healed the wound. But six days after the scratch, I had a yellow (jaundice) and very unhealthy. I have a fever and is very weak," he explained.

His family is so worried about Jon finally called an ambulance and rushed to the hospital. Jon was taken to intensive care, where tests showed the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys have failed to function. At one stage his heart also stopped beating for a few seconds and had to restart. Doctors also said the aortic heart valve replacement is required.

"The doctor told me if I did not have surgery, I will die in 48 hours. My wife is very scared and I was pretty scared," he explained.

Although not all the dangerous cat claw scratches, but this should not be underestimated how much its size.

"Scratch an infected wound will usually begin to look red and infected, the lymph nodes will begin to swell near the wound after ten days. This will be followed by fever, fatigue, headaches, in some cases loss of appetite, enlarged spleen and a sore throat, "explains Dr. Suranjith Seneviratne, imunolog at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

Initially the wound can be seen as having healing, but the bacteria can travel to other places. Symptoms often appear distant days after the injury occurred, because the incubation period is usually a few days and the bacteria multiply more and more.

Bacteria can settle on the heart, liver, brain, kidneys and lungs, in people with low immune systems such as, baby or someone with an existing disease such as cancer or diabetes.

People who are taking certain medications are also at risk, such as drugs that can suppress the immune system, including chemotherapy and steroids (which is used for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis).

"In healthy people, usually their immune system will kill the bacteria," says Dr Seneviratne.

Not only animals that can claw scratches menyebaban blood poisoning, but also injuries due to glass splinters or thorns.
